The champagne corks have been popping recently as the winners of the EDP Business awards and Norfolk Tourism awards were announced within weeks of each other.

And with clients Woodforde’s and Credo Asset Finance in the running, we were glued to Twitter late into the evening as the results came in.

Sadly it wasn’t to be on this occasion. But being named as one of only three finalists in their respective categories, out of more than 300 entries, means both businesses did incredibly well.

So with all the effort of entering awards, you might think it’s simply not worth the bother when the results can’t be guaranteed.

Entering an award forces you to reflect on your achievements over the past 12 months, revisit the business plan and sharpen your focus. Boost brand awareness The resulting PR is a big bonus. Whether you win or not, being a finalist will boost profile through pre-awards publicity and coverage after the event itself.

It doesn’t stop there. An award-win will boost your reputation as an expert in your sector. And you could be asked to speak at events or share your opinions in the media.3. Spread the word online You’ve worked hard for your success so tell your social media following and let the good news spread.

Creating fresh, relevant content about your award win, posting it on your website and sharing on social media will also benefit your SEO.4. Cash injection! Some award schemes offer prize money. Particularly those celebrating small businesses and start-ups. Winners of the Nectar Small Business Awardsreceive £2,000 in cash, thousands of Nectar points and invaluable business advice at a round-table event, this year hosted by Karren Brady.5. A magnet for talent Who doesn’t want to work for the best? Schemes like the Times Best 100 Companies recognise the cream of Britain’s employers. And help to attract future talent. Don’t let your competitors take home the crown If you don’t take the time to enter, you could miss out on all of the above. And admit it, there’s nothing more annoying than reading about a competitors’ win when you know you do a better job.
