My Work Experience at Reflection PR

in News

Lauren completed a full-week of work experience with us at Reflection PR and here’s her story telling you all about her experience..

Recently my University ‘bubble’ has been well and truly burst as I graduated from the University of Birmingham with a degree in Psychology BSc (Hons) in June. I guess the overarching question was, what’s next for me?

Knowing that further study and completing a doctorate in Psychology wasn’t for me, I returned to my hometown of Norwich to pursue a career in PR and communications. This seemed an obvious decision as I have always kept up to date with current affairs and have a passion for writing and design.

Suzy Pettican, the Managing Director at Reflection PR, kindly offered me a week work experience in June of 2015. With June and July set to be busy months for Reflection PR, there was plenty to be involved with and Suzy made sure my time was both varied and insightful.

I felt honoured to be given free reign to create a pitch for an idea to a local radio station and choose winners for a local newspaper competition. My eye for detail was also tested as I was asked to proof read press releases and the new microsite content.

I came to appreciate the ‘leg work’ involved in PR, including brainstorming, developing ideas and updating media coverage reports. The value of research was also emphasised and a skill I relied upon to maintain a lot of media and contact databases, the history of clients, as well as local celebrities and influencers.

One particular skill I wished to hone during my time at Reflection PR was press-release writing. Notoriously difficult to get the correct tone and style, Suzy gave me pointers and guided me through the writing process. Eventually I was given the task of writing a press release for an upcoming local event, an opportunity I relished.

I have learnt that the PR working environment is fast-paced, with never a dull moment, something I thrived in.

I would like to thank Suzy, Daniella and Sam for making me feel a valued member of the team at Reflection PR. Hopefully our paths will cross again as you haven’t put me off pursuing this career path just yet!
