Charity celebrates 4th anniversary – 01/06/11

June 1st, 2011

balloons2Red Balloon Norwich celebrated its 4th anniversary recently with a little helping hand from Reflection PR.

Red Balloon is the only national charity set up specifically to recover severely bullied children who are out of school.  The birthday celebrations provided a good opportunity for businesses to see how remarkable the local centre is in transforming young people’s lives.

The children got involved by giving guided tours and chatting to guests.  And a photo opportunity was arranged with journalists, capturing the children releasing balloons with their future wishes attached.

Overall it was a fantastic afternoon.  Past, existing and future supporters all gathered together and almost £1000 in donations were received.  Media coverage was also gained on BBC Look East, BBC Radio Norfolk, Future Radio and Norwich Evening News.  And businesses pledged their support by choosing Red Balloon as their charity of the year.

The power of PR…

Reflection PR provides pro-bono support to this charity.  If you would like to get involved, please email suzy@reflectionpr.co.uk

Client pays 99% of Income Protection claims – 18/03/2011

March 18th, 2011

dg-mutual-logodg mutual, an Income Protection specialist for self-employed professionals, has paid out 99% of claims for the third year running, with over 50% of claims paid out within one week.

It is the third year the Mutual Society has settled 99% of Income Protection claims, which is one of the highest rates in the industry.

dg mutual believes the high rates are due to conducting thorough medical checks at the outset.  Last year, over 50% of all Income Protection insurance claims were paid within one week and over 90% were turned around within two weeks.

As a Mutual Society, dg mutual was set up in 1927 to assist members during hardship.  Its CEO, David Thompson, says “Our philosophy holds true today – we pride ourselves in settling claims quickly and without hassle for our members who tell us it really matters.

There are many stories about Income Protection insurance payouts taking a long time to settle which is not what we want for our members.  We carry out all our medical checks at the outset which ultimately makes it a far simpler process and means there are no nasty surprises.”

Infection is still dg mutual’s highest cause of Income Protection Insurance claim including Swine flu and viral illnesses, proving it’s not just long-term conditions that keep self employed professionals off work.

As a Mutual Society, profits are shared between dg mutual members – regardless of the number of claims.  In 2010, £195,000 of final bonuses were paid out to retiring members.

Xenodu improves learning – 24/01/11

January 24th, 2011

xenodu

A Norfolk company is improving learning in schools by using green screen special effects technology in interactive pods, with students queuing up to discover more.

Likened to a “Big Brother diary room”, a sensor controlled pod encourages pupils to share their thoughts in a virtual world using PISCES technology developed by Xenodu Ltd.

The pod has proven popular with young pupils who have been queuing up to watch another school’s pupils read poetry on its 32″ screen.  Ellie Ireland, a year 9 pupil, describes her experience;

“Sometimes poetry can be mega-boring but the pod is a fun, modern way to learn, understand and enjoy poetry.  Stepping inside the black pod of wonder feels like stepping into the diary room of Big Brother. It really does bring poetry to life and allows you to explore poetry in a way you never have before: interpreting feelings and meanings.”

Paul Strickland, Director of Xenodu Ltd whose clients include the NHS and BBC, believes the technology is popular with schools because of its surprise element;

“Young people enjoy learning in an exciting and different way.  Because it’s a private space, they feel confident in sharing their opinions, meaning their learning is enhanced and honest feedback is gained.”
